I want a rolling mill

I want a rolling mill! However, I'm going to have to make a lot more sales until I can afford one!

The metal for these earrings was textured through the rolling mil at my silversmithing class using a material leaf (thanks Becky!). Then I cut out leaf shapes with a handsaw and soldered on stems/earwires.

  1. I also want a rolling mill! The class I used to attend had one, and I loved using it. I have a friend with a small one now, who very kindly lets me use it, but to have one of my own would be wonderful...Those earrings are amazing - those little pieces of leaf create such stunning effects!

    1. Glad you like them, SMJ. I have just re-enrolled on to the Autumn term of my silversmithing class so hopefully will try out some different textures. Can you recommend anything good?

    2. Exciting news! Linen, the 'rougher' the better, can look wonderful rolled. Fabric in general can also be effective, including simpler weaves for a subtle effect. Also, have a look out for handmade papers as some of the effects you can gain are magical. Another couple of ideas are embossed stickers used for card-making, and those net bags that fruit come in. Some things just don't seem to work well though, so it is a case of trial and error but it's fun experimenting :)

I look forward to seeing what you create!

    3. Thank you SMJ, I will certainly check some of those out when I return to my course in September. It's amazing that something so delicate like paper can mark metal!

  2. I want one also. I had a rolling mill but when I moved across country, I sold it and now that I have a place for it, I wish I had it back. I purchased mine at Harbor Freight...it wasn't very expensive but it worked great. I love your framed flower necklaces!

    1. Thank you Sandi - I can understand why you couldn't move it with you, they are so big! I have just had an offer from a friend to use hers so I might have to take her up on that.
      Thanks for stopping by.
      Kristin :)
