Gemstone Rings

Recently I have been challenging myself to make rings using different techniques...

My latest creation features a bezel set square faceted cushion cabochon.  It was really satisfying filing down the back plate to the bezel and making the join seamless (it felt a bit like magic!).

I have also been making rings using a basket set faceted stone.  This is really fiddly but I found using my new ball burrs and stonesetting burrs really helped the stone sit in the setting.

Following a demonstration by Soham Harrison on YouTube (he is SO good!), I made another ring using a claw setting.  Again the burrs really helped and I have also bought a small table top vice which held the ring whilst I set the stone.

All these rings are available in my online shops (Etsy and Folksy).

    1. Thank you LCH (Emma)
I learnt about Soham through Tracy at Cinnamon Jewellery (I think that's how I found you, via her blog) and have learnt so much from him. He's a bit like a 'God of jewellery making'! The only problem is he makes it look so easy, however, what I really like is he repeats lots of important facts as he creates his jewellery which I remember when I am soldering.
I read on your blog recently that you are thinking about some jewellery classes. I am so impressed that what you have done so far is completely self-taught! I re-start my silversmithing course tomorrow (second term). I am really looking forward to it as I am going to challenge myself to make lots of rings. Tomorrow I am hoping to learn how to make a tube setting.
Anyway, thanks for your regular feedback on my work.

  3. These are all wonderful and you should be very proud of yourself for making them - I especially love the citrine one...!

    1. Thank you SMJ, that's really kind of you to say! I'm having so much fun. Currently I am working on another type of setting (tube setting). I started it at my weekly silversmithing class yesterday so it's still in the making. Fingers crossed I will have a finished ring by the end of the next class.
      All the best

  4. Lovely rings. Prong settings and all that fiddly stuff scares me a bit so I haven't tried them yet! I love the citrine ring the most.
I start back at jewellery classes at night school soon for a 2nd year so will ask the teacher to show me how to make these lovelies!

    1. Thanks Tracy, I'm having so much fun trying out all these settings and am in the process of creating two different 'tube' set rings (one with 3 stones). I am pondering whether to have a go at setting the stones myself or waiting till my next class. I definitely recommend ring making - it's really challenging but so satisfying when it goes right!
      All the best
